Saturday, December 02, 2006Stan the Man still upbeat!
I had the good fortune today to bump into my old friend and former Council colleague Stan Smith, making a visit to the Corner Shop. Stan has been a lifelong Conservative and was also one of the leading lights of the last Progressive Association's administration of South Shields council.
Always a man of great wit and humour with a friendly greeting for all, he has spent much of his retirement continuing his campaigns against the North East Assembly and the Tyne Tunnel. However, he had the misfortune to suffer a stroke last year which affected his ability to use a keyboard and his powers of speech. I am happy to report that his health appears to be progressing well, and he still maintains his impish humour and a great interest in local affairs. Best wishes Stan, I know you will see this, you are still an inspiration to those who oppose Labour domination in this borough. I also met the young man who was responsible for setting up South Shields Conservative's website on Blogger, (you know- the one I keep criticising for being almost useless and out of date!), and just as I suspected he appears to have lost the password for the Blogger account. So here are a couple of suggestions (a) get in touch with Blogger to try and recover the username and password, or (b) set up a new account with a new email address to create a new site. Only this time give it the attention that it deserves, keep it updated regularly, use comment controls to prevent the "spamming" of the site, and then you can look forward to an influx of readers - just don't try and pinch mine!

It's good to hear that Stan is in better health. I don't always agree with his views but I like him. He has gone out of his way to encourage others who are interested in local politics - even if they are not of the same political colour.

I'm sure Stan would challenge your assertion that he's "against" the second Tyne tunnel - it's the tolls and the funding mechanism which causes him concern. I hope he's back in action soon. We need more people like him, unafraid to call the council to account. << Home |
