Riverside clean up

I have blogged ad nauseam over the past couple of years over the lack of public access to Redhead's Landing in Commercial Road, South Shields. See my previous posts - here. It is has taken a resident of Tony Blair's constituency, Sedgefield, to pluck up the courage, with help and support from others, to make an official application to have the historic landing added to the designated map of Public Rights of Way. (Les, you have my fullest support.) I was heartened to read that a team of volunteers have been down to Redhead's Landing to clean the place up, it was in a bit of a shocking state. Perhaps this may be a precurser leading to action to re-open Redhead's Landing to the public. I was a bit mystified, at the same time, to see the place described as Templetown Slipway, was this an attempt to divert attention away from our campaign to re-open Redhead's Landing, or has Lisa Nightingale been wrongly advised on it's name? My last email to Irene Lucas, Chief Executive Officer of South Tyneside Council, elicited a rather non-commital response to my questions about who would form the committee to consider the application, and when it would meet. She was rather dismissive of any attempt to estimate when the public might be expected to regain access through the (currently locked) pedestrian gate. Perhaps someone within the Council might be able to offer Curly a response to this long running saga! Link Shields Gazette |
