Sunday, November 12, 2006"Lest we forget"
Remembrance Sunday.
Curly joined in with the people of South Shields this morning as we remembered the fallen of the two great wars and those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in later conflicts. It seemed to me that there was a greater crowd than usual at the Cenotaph at Westoe, South Shields, perhaps as a result of the current situation in Iraq and Afghanistan, where servicemen from South Tyneside are currently serving. The parade from the town hall to Westoe was also larger than in previous years, and it was great to see so many youngsters taking part, the youngest were from the Boy Scouts, many associations and organisations were represented including The Royal British Legion, the Air Training Corps, the (DLI) Army Cadet Force, the Sea Cadets from T.S. Collingwood, the Territorial Army, and St. John Ambulance. The borough was represented by the Mayor Cllr. Ed Malcolm and his mother Alice the Mayoress, his brother Iain, Deputy Leader of South Tyneside Council, was also in attendance. It must have provided a few proud moments for the Mayoress, and her sons, as she took in the occasion. Many other councillors joined the march from the town hall (although I have to say that some South Shields members were conspicuous by their absence.) The Chief Executive of South Tyneside Council, Irene Lucas was also on hand to lay a wreath, along with representatives from the police and the fire and rescue service. The service was officiated by Rev. Paul Kennedy, the vicar of St. Michael and All Angels, Westoe Road, and this year everything went smoothly with no technical problems. I would love to have been able to put together a video comprising snippets from all of the Remembrance Day ceremonies in South Tyneside, but you can't be in more than one place at any given time. Perhaps next year I can recruit some helpers! This is for our ex-pat visitors to the Corner Shop, if there is one thing we do quite well in this country, it's the ceremonial.
