Goldsmith unmoved

Downing St. in 'blind panic'

The Daily Telegraph reports today that the Attorney General Lord Goldsmith has no intention of stepping aside should papers arrive on his desk from the police and CPA implicating 'teflon Tony' in the cash for peerages affair.

Constutionally his job is to advise the government on any cases involving the 'public interest', it is also as a member of the government that he brings or defends cases involving his ministerial colleagues. His wicket became that little bit stickier following reports this weekend that the Prime Minister's close confidante Jonathan Powell is to be interviewed again 'under caution' by deputy assistant commissioner John Yates, following the reported find of a 'smoking gun' email within the Downing Street I.T system, which has Downing St. reportedly in 'blind panic'.

Lord Goldsmith of course is a former legal colleague of Cherie Blair and owes his position to Tony's patronage. Surely, according to the Tories, his position would become untenable if the Yates' inquiry was to move towards a prosecution, or involve the Prime Minister at the same level of questioning as the fifteen others quizzed under caution. The public interest ought to involve Goldsmith passing his authority on to someone else!

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair has looked after his future prospects of a peerage (traditionally given to former holders of his office) by washing his hands of the affair and giving Yates free reign to follow his nose right into the corridors of power and into the back rooms of No. 10.

How long before Tony Blair is invited to help with his enquiries?
