Blair leak causes concern.

Threat to civil liberty!

Iain Dale's Diary today reveals that at a meeting last week of the Reform Club Media Group addressed by the Metroploitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair, he let it slip that we might have to be prepared to accept a return to internment.

"Sir Ian said the British people should 'brace themselves for a truly appalling act of terror'. He said that following this act of barbarism 'people would be talking quite openly about internment', giving the impression that he would be leading the pro-internment lobby. No doubt he will find a willing supplicant in the tougher than tough Home Secretary John Reid.

My informant thought at first that it really was a throwaway remark but on reflection felt that it couldn't have been made by accident."

Whilst Iain is relying heavily on the information gained from a single source, without corroboration, if true, it marks a significant change in stance and causes great concern for the liberties of many.

Our liberties have been hard won over many centuries and are cherished as the freedoms and lifeblood of a responsible democracy.

Internment without trial has been used in the past most recently in Northern Ireland where, without doubt, it became the most succesfull recruiting sergeant for the terrorists for many a year. If this is to be Blair's answer after 'a trully appalling act of terror' then it demonstrates the weakness of his own leadership of the Metropolitan Police Force, and suggests an inability to collate and collect sufficient viable evidence to take to a court of law and try a suspect.

At a time when we learn there are only 125 places left in the U.K. prisons, and the Lord Chief Justice is urging magistrates and judges to use more "community sentences", and the Home Secretary believes it is worth risking a few more absconds from open prisons, it beggars belief that Sir Ian should be talking about filling up non-existant prison cells with people who look like they could be a terrorist threat (i.e.Brazilian Muslims.)

Curly thinks that Sir Ian Blair should join John Reid behind bars to learn a lesson.
