Stephen Hepburn

Hepburn praises Quinn

There is one thing I like about Jarrow MP Stephen Hepburn, he is an avid life long Sunderland supporter, and that's just about where the affinity ends.

Writing his weekly column in tonight's Shields Gazette he was in fullsome praise of Niall Quinn's commitments to maintain the club's policy of low pricing for season tickets and games, once again season ticket prices have been frozen.

He remarked upon the ridiculous prices charged at some clubs and the inability of working class fathers to take their children to the games. It's a pretty fair point. Curly has not been a season ticket holder at Sunderland for some time, this is because Corner Shop proprietors are expected to be behind the counter at weekends. However, I am lucky enough to have people in place who will allow me to have a number of weekends off, and, when I can I like to go to the Stadium of Light to follow the team that I started supporting in 1963. If I were to take both children with me, the price of the three tickets would be 59 pounds, add in a programme, some burgers and coke, A.L.S. magazine, sweets for the kids and the total price for the day out would be around 75 pounds. He's right you know, attending a football match is almost a hobby for the idle rich "prawn sandwhich" brigade in Manchester!

Stephen Hepburn, of course, knows all about value for money football matches. He was one of those MPs along with Lawrie McMenemy who enjoyed taking in a World Cup match in Germany, free of charge, courtesy of the sponsors MacDonalds!
