Cultures Together Mela, Sunday 2nd. July 2006
South shields has a long history of multi-culteral diversity and harmony which can be seriously envied by other U.K. towns. Today I had just enough time to visit the annual Mela held in the Bents Park, South Shields. The weather was gloriously hot and it promised to be a very colourful event. I only had time to spend perhaps 45 minutes there before returning home to get to sleep again (Curly is in the middle of working nights as we take stock at the Corner Shop) but I was determined that our visitors here get to see a small taster, get a little flavour of the event, and get the urge to come and visit us in South Shields.
I wasn't able to stay long enough to see the main entertainment on the big stage, but the Bents Park was filling up very nicely by the time I left. There are free events at the Bents Park every Sunday for a couple of months now, so why not come and join us? I'll try to cover as many of them that I can, but please remember that Curly often works on Sunday too, so I will not be able to present them all to you on this site, I'll do my best though.
