Tuesday, July 04, 2006Chronicle slurs townChronicle slurs South Shields In an article in this evening's Newcastle Chronicle a Sunderland teacher berates her council over the behaviour of an "at risk" teenage girl in their care who it is reported has been arrested and seen in "known red light areas" of South Shields. I know there is such a thing as journalistic licence, but I have lived in this town all of my life and cannot think of any part of it that I could describe in this way. A "red light area" conjures up the image of massed, accumulated prostitution, this town hardly displays any of these traits, it is not like areas of Middlesbrough or Leeds or Amsterdam for heaven's sake. Even the known haunts of years gone by where one might find a "lady of the night" (The Shoreline Club, The Kismet etc.) have long since disappeared. I have posted a comment on the Chronicle's site asking that their journalist rewrite this piece and remove the slur on this town that they have created, it is not factually correct and we don't need it thank you very much!
