Super school site agreed

"Super school" site agreed

It became like waiting for news on Rooney's right foot, everyone on tenterhooks waiting for a decision, with the possibility that it may bring bad news for some, and that is how it transpired. After months of wrangling and disputes over sites, complex public consultation exercises which once again proved to be cosmetic, the decision has been taken to build the new school at the site of the current King George School in Nevison Avenue.

Never mind the fact that over 1,100 people were objecting to that particular location, or that others, including myself, suggested that the Brinkburn site might be better suited. The "New Labour" policy of listening to the public failed because of a lack of deaf aid batteries.

However, I had also argued at one point that a little more decisiveness was required, and that a decision would have to be made to progress the application for grant funding, so I shouldn't be too critical. I had stressed that Councillors should make policy decisions, stick by them, be accountable, and face the consequences. They have done exactly this, and it is worth remembering that the educational needs of our youngster must be paramount, it is not a case for making political capital of.

We can now only hope that the plans reach fruition as quickly as possible, and that good alternative uses for the current Brinkburn site can be found.
