Strikes loom at Asda

Strike warning for Asda

Shoppers at Asda in Ocean Road, South Shields, and at the larger store in Boldon Colliery are warned of the possibility of strike action by those colleagues working within the distribution network.

Fork lift truck drivers, order pickers, and hgv drivers at the Washington distribution centre are amongst thousands of GMB members who have voted massively in favour of strike action in a long running pay and bonus dispute with the American owned Walmart supermarket chain.

It is speculated that action will be planned to coincide with a future England match in the World Cup , Asda has reported a huge boost in sales as fans stock up on food and booze on the day of a match. Because the distribution network plays such an important part in getting supplies onto the shelves in a matter of hours, industrial action would quickly be felt by consumers as the supermarket quickly runs out of stock.

The GMB is already threatening additional legal action, should Asda/Walmart attempt to use agency staff to move stocks from the warehouses into stores, this is illegal.

Here at The Corner Shop, we sympathise, the last bonus paid to staff coincided with England's last World Cup win in 1966!
