"This knife amnesty is about creating safer streets throughout South Shields. I am delighted the Shields Gazette and the police in South Tyneside have joined forces to encourage people to stop carrying knives. This amnesty is a chance for those who carry illegal knives to come clean and hand them in - but remember it is only for a limited time." Whilst I too think it a good idea, I fear it is only law abiding citizens who take advantage of these schemes, thus reducing the number of knives that may end up in the wrong hands. In an earlier post I related to the banning of handguns and the subsequent rise in gun related crime. There is the perception of a rise in knife related crime right now, and I, for one, cannot see the cowardly knife carriers agreeing to give them up. The only real deterrent is harsh sentencing in effective prisons, under a more effective Home Office regime than we have now. Link The Shields Gazette |
