Trow Quarry

Trow Quarry

South Tyneside Borough Council's Scrutiny Committee for Trow Quarry was this morning visiting the site to make an inspection whilst contractors for High-Point Rendell carry on their detailed investigations.

I only hope that the weather was favourable and that our Councillors got a good whiff of methane as they meandered the site. Methane does not have a pleasant smell. I also hope that they were able to get on to the beach at Graham Sands to witness how much waste material is openly exposed on the seaward facing wall of the "made ground". I hope they appreciate how easy it is for the public to access this beach and how simple it would be for children to pick up and play with any items deposited on the beach from the former landfill waste.

They will continue their investigations tomorrow.

Isn't it amazing how they have managed to get world-reknowned experts (eg Prof Paul Younger) to agree that Trow poses no threat to the public - maybe the Council pays everyone off.... or just maybe... the experts at the Council were right all along and didn't want the media (if you can call Shields Gazette that) to scare people unnecessarily?

I'm not sure that the Gazette and the former NT warden were trying to be scaremongers, I'm more convinced that the Council is doing it's damned utmost to water down the findings of High-Point Rendell in an obvious attempt to allay public fears. Why pay such large sums to an independant health and safety risk assessor and then try and say you don't have confidence in their finding? So much so, that the Council finds another independant expert to refute the report of High-Point Rendell. Where is the integrity of this tactic?
