Council budget balanced

Council budget moving back into black

After a heady nett overspend of 4.9 million pounds last year South Tyneside Borough Council put into action a budget recovery plan involving a staff recruitment moratorium, restructuring senior directorates, voluntary redundancies, raiding the reserves, and a 4.1 million pound reduction in spending. The reserves are in a position now to be replenished thanks to the receipt of 3.8 million pounds owed to the Borough by South Tyneside Primary Care Trust. So that's a good start in laying down a foundation for next year's finances.

Additionally our Council has chosen to, perhaps, adopt Tory privatisation policies for the outsourcing of some of it's service provision, New (Blue) Labour in action!

Some other savings could be identified and with a twist of good fortune our leaders might attempt to "freeze" council taxes next year, or could we encourage them to be extra ambitious, and be the first known Labour controlled Council in the North-East to announce a reduction in the charges applied to it's residents?

Why don't they dispense with half of their "new technologies", dispense with the website, get rid of email and revert to good old typewritten letters with envelopes and postage stamps - just think of the huge amount of cash that could be saved by NOT replying to Curly's questions!!
